THAI TEACHERS OFFERED GUNS, FLAK JACKETS
Teachers in Thailand's violence-torn southern provinces will be given free flak jackets and allowed to pack guns, the government says.

Well this is a scary article to say the least. I had no idea that violence was so bad in schools in Thailand. For some reason, I always thought it was only bad in the US, but apparently it is happening all over the world. Normally, I would say that teachers packing weapons is a bad idea. But reading their situation sheds a whole new light on that issue. I agree with teachers being able to carry guns and wear flack jackets at the schools over there, they shouldn't have to fear for their lives just doing their job. Biggest difference is that these deaths aren't being caused because of a messed up kid, but by a group angry with the government and apparently associates the teachers in with the government.

Nearly 800 people, including at least two dozen teachers, have been killed since January 2004 by unrest that the government blames on Muslim separatists. Militants have targeted teachers because they see them as symbols of authority for the mainly Buddhist government in Bangkok. |
As someone who has chosen to teach as a profession, this is a horrifying article. I can't imagine doing the job under those conditions. I would rather see the schools protected and properly armed and trained personnel protecting schools, teachers and students.
Why things like this have to happen is beyond me. Why attack schools or students that want to learn? They are not helping thier fellow countrymen/women be better people. Maybe they wish to remain in the dark ages. I hope that those who are causing this violence learn that education is a good way out of violence.
