British toddlers hooked on curry
LONDON (AFP) - British toddlers are adopting their parents' increasingly adventurous culinary habits, a survey showed, with curry proving to be their favourite food.

I always thought that kids preferred things less sophisticated like hotdogs and french fries. My son wouldn't eat anything but simple foods until he turned five or so. Its interesting that the children chose foods with curry, I wonder if it has to do with the diet of their parents? Can taste for certain spices transfer during birth? I wonder how many of them had both parents that eat curry and breast fed. Maybe it would make a difference if the curry 'flavor' transferred in breast milk.
Kids imitate what their parents do, beginning before the age of one year old! If it is offered, and it isn't awful, kids will eat it.
And yes, Konq, I know from experience that flavors from food transmit to the milk
I think has to do with the parent's culture. In Trinidad there is a big East Indian population and they eat curry almost every day. I love it. JB loves it too and Felipe has a fascination for curry. I think if Felipe was raised in another country he would be eating other foods and probably will not like curry but because it was introduced to him on an early age then it became something he is used to eat.
Well... my son(age 2) loves hot and spicy food... probably because he would rather eat what we're eating than his own chef boyardee. Also, I happened to find a truly authentic Island Restaurant (owner from Trinidad) very close to my house and much to my surprise, the curry chicken plate was exactly how I had it in Trinidad. THAT was a little too spicy for him. He kept saying "hot" over and over again. But really.. he likes the unusual stuff. Just like my husband, he'll push sweets out of the way to get to veggies and fruit in the fridge.
All of my children were born in the UK. Since I have returned here to the US with them we finally found a brilliant Indian restaurant close by. Even my youngest (6) loves curry but will not try anything too spicy. My other two (7 & 9) will eat just about anything. My wife is always trying to get friend's children to try different things at different places but so far no go.
When I was being raised, my family didn't eat anything that wasn't 'English'
My parents still will not eat any foods from other countries. (Even when they go abroad on holiday, they have to find an English restaurant)
I ate my first Indian curry(persuaded by hubby) when I was about 25
I have been determined to try to allow my children to try lots of different foods, from all over the world, including curry.
I have no problem if they don't like it, that's fine, at least they have tried it!
It has been quite surprising to find that my 3 year old loves onion bhajis, mild curries, mango etc, my 4 year old will only go as far as having a liking for the rice!
I still don't eat too much curry, but my eldest son and husband don't mind, as that leaves even more for them!
My son is addicted to curry and we have no problem getting him to eat it. I find most children inherit the taste of their parents and will only function based on what they have 'learnt' to eat.
