Karl Malone will probably end up re-signing with the Lakers anyway; the main motive behind him declaring free agency was to get more money than he made last year. He has already said how happy he was to play in LA and I dont think anyone else could afford him, or wants to take a chance with him. He will no doubt be in the Hall of Fame one day and will go down as one of the best power forwards in the history of the NBA, but he should seriously consider retirement.
Sadly the Jazz under utilized him for the time they had with Stockton to make an awesome combo. Had they gotten better backup I think they could have done more. Karl is good, and yes, he needs to take a break, but once he can perform and there is money that can be made why not stay? I know I would. Some people just love the game, even if it is not for the money, maybe he is one of those people?
The other thing to keep in mind is how fit Karl has kept himself throughout his NBA career. He has an amazing workout routine and does not play like he is 41, except when he is hurt. He can still contribute to a team as a marquee player, and the Lakers shouldnt expect to pay him peanuts just because of his age.
Utah Jazz: Is Karl Malone or Tim Duncan the best all-time power forward?
As for Karl Malone, well, The Mailman will let everyone else banter back and forth about a topic that will no doubt be discussed around water coolers with the Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremonies taking place this week. That argument being, of course: Who is the best power forward of all time? Ref. Source 7
