Can drugs and genetic manipulation change homosexual behavior? This is an interesting study done on fruit flies:

A new study finds that both drugs and genetic manipulation can turn the homosexual behavior of fruit flies on and off within a matter of hours. While the genetic finding supports the thinking that homosexuality is hard-wired, the drug finding surprisingly suggests it's not that simple. In fact, homosexuality in the fruit flies seems to be regulated by how they interpret the scent of another.... |
If the same result can be reproduced in humans it will make for an interesting discussion on personal rights. I wonder how many would actually willingly take the drug to reverse their sexual preference in either direction. The interesting part is it is the scent and how it is interpreted by the individual that is still the trigger.
A thought and true fact story. A heterosexual man gets beat by a women and suffers many head injuries from the conflict soon after finds him self attracted to men. I had thought the change was due to the bad experience. In light of this experiment could have the brain been injured causing the interpretation of the pheromones to have changed? Yes this man is now a divot homosexual who previously thought such a thing was perverse.
Why is no one asking the obvious question here? Why are scientists making flies gay to begin with? Our tax money wouldn't be better spent?
Krakyn, I think your right, if it can be change, the it does become a personal rights issue. As well, if it can be changed, that means that it wasn't a "choice" to begin with, but something chemical in your brain. And, do we really want to start chemically altering people so that their preferences match preconceived notions of normal. This opens up more cans with more worms if you ask me.
Konquererz, I actually had to laugh when I read this study. But then I thought about it. The scientists chose the fruit flies since these are considered pests and if something went wrong, the animal activists will not have anything to say about it. After all, who will miss a fly if it is dead?
I think there are some people in this world who would jump for joy, if this experiment is approved. There are some parents who believe that their offspring could do anything and are willing to support their loved one. Except their choice of sexual orientation. No parent enjoys hearing that their son or daughter is gay. Some folks even go as far as forcing their offspring to seek counselling, hoping and praying for the psychiatrist, to perform a miracle, by convincing their child not to change his sex. There are individuals who may become gay and then try to become heterosexual again. I believe that this formula will be a success, if it is approved by the FDA.
Greeenie you mentioned flies are just a pest and I think we all overlooked one of the biggest markets out there for this research. Pest control! Think about it convert them all to being Homosexual and one could wipe out the entire species. This is also a tad scary in the upset of the food chain but I am thinking of pests like the Asian beetle that has hit southern Ontario. It does not belong here to start and they really bite like crazy what a way to stop them and the hormones would be specific to the individual creature.
Much research would have to put into this yet to find a way to deliver the substance that would not corrupt the environment but I think it is a good application of the science.
I ponder would it then be able to be applied as a war tactic convert all the enemy to homosexuality and try to wipe out a entire country or specific human tribe?

I did have a read. I had no idea genetic science was so advanced that they could actually do that. I am weary of such attempts to convert people to "the norm" though. It conjures up images of Nazi Germany where anyone not heterosexual or Aryan was simply killed for not conforming to a given value of "normal" or "correct" or "desirable". I thought your point that it could be used as a genocidal tool to wipe out groups of people by making them all gay to stop reproduction of the group was a chilling reminder that science can be used for harmful purposes if put in the wrong hands. I love my boyfriend very much and I'm not sure Id want to live a life that did not include that love so giving me the option of a pill to take to "cure " me of that sends shivers down my spine. However, it is interesting in and of itself . In my opinion, though, I think it diverts attention from the real issue and that is why societies feel the need to demonize a certain type of sexuality to the point where it considers wether it can be altered. Can't people just be themselves? Don't get me wrong, I value genetic research into actual diseases like cystic fibrosis that brings tangible benefits to those affected but as for "curing" or changing sexuality I think our money could be better spent. |
Flies get 'mind-control sex swap'
Scientists take control of flies' brains to make females behave just like males.
