Hundreds of new sex abuse claims against Boy Scouts of America suggest leaders exploited their prominent positions. A lawsuit filed late Monday against BSA says hundreds of former scouts have come forward in recent months with new accounts of sexual abuse, allegations from across eight decades that touch nearly every state. This is frightening, as I have children in scouting. Especially now that there are girls in the scouts there is a new vulnerable population. It's upsetting they are fighting against the statute of limitations being raised although I know why they feel they have to. But it doesn't instill confidence. They do have some sensible rules in place nowadays though. For example, kids aren't allowed to be alone with less than two adults and kids also have to be in groups of two or more. And they do regular training for the adults and the kids about abuse.
Boy Scouts files for bankruptcy amid deluge of sex abuse cases. Boy Scouts of America is facing hundreds, if not thousands, more abuse allegations as efforts to extend the civil statute of limitations for survivors of child sexual abuse have gained momentum in recent years. Source 8f.
Nearly 90,000 file sexual abuse claims against the Boy Scouts - the largest-ever child abuse case involving a single national organization. Lawyers representing the potential victims say the total is likely an undercount of boys victimized in Scouting over the organization’s 100-year history. The case now moves to mediation, with disputes over which assets can be used to compensate survivors expected. Source 1n.
Boy Scouts of America's plan to exit bankruptcy leaves an average of $6,000 per abuse survivor. Survivors say it's 'woefully' inadequate. Boy Scouts of America is proposing to pay roughly $220 million toward a trust to compensate tens of thousands of former members who say they were abused during their time as scouts, according to a statement from the committee that represents survivors in the case. The number is a fraction of the $1 billion of the organization's estimated value, and a sliver of the value of its subsidiaries, which USA TODAY estimates could exceed $3.7 billion. Ref. USAToday.
