Boys, leaders celebrate 100 years of Scouting
More than 15,000 Boy Scouts and adult leaders from the Great Salt Lake Council gathered at Deseret Peak Complex and Miller Motorsports Park on Saturday for the 2010 Boy Scout Centennial Jamboral. This year marks 100 years since Boy Scouting, which got its start in England in 1908, took root in America. The Boy Scouts of America is one of the largest youth organizations in the United States. The Boy Scouts are "Discussing potentially removing the national membership restriction regarding sexual orientation," according to Deron Smith, director of public relations for the Boy Scouts of America.
The Scouts' current policy denies membership to "Individuals who are open or avowed homosexuals or who engage in behavior that would become a distraction to the mission of the BSA," the group's website says.
There are over 2.5 million youth members and over 1 million adult members nationwide, according to the BSA website. Ref. CNN
The Boy Scouts executive committee has written a resolution for consideration that would remove the restriction denying membership to youth on the basis of sexual orientation, the Boy Scouts of America said Friday.
