Mormon Homosexuality Poster says, "At first I was against it because of the sanctity of marriage and it's eternal purpose, but now I am not sure. I agree that a Temple marriage can only be between male and female. This is because of the religious sanctity of marriage for eternity, for propogation and simply because that is how God intended it. However, the Church recognizes the validity of civil marriages that are only for this life and not eternity, even though this is not how God intended it. "Your view is... ?" A person who struggles with same-sex attraction in this life probably did not progress very well in the pre-existence when it came to social relationships and certain truths with regards to the sexes.

Is this a idea from a G.A. or an apostle? I am interested in knowing how you came to this conclusion. I personally am very very hesitant to say who progressed and who did not. How do encounter for environmental and biological influences on our personality, socialization, and our being? Does the pre-mortal existence account for all of our weaknesses and strenght? How do you account for such things?

Well, it has been taught by General Authorities that many of the traits and characteristics that make up our personality were developed in the pre-existence. Never have I heard a GA specifically mention that being Gay in this life may have been due to something we did or did not do in our previous estate. However, in my mind it can logically be deduced.

Not to say they are stuck being like that. Just as the person who has a tendency to anger quickly, or the person who is proud, all weaknesses can be overcome. But when society teaches us that being Gay is part of what you are and is your nature, it becomes difficult to overcome because you are accepting it as natural.

Actually as Gaucho pointed out, there were Prophets who have talked about certain characteristics of people on this Earth as related to obedience in the Pre-existence, one of those Prophets was Joseph Fielding Smith with regards to race (This is covered in the LDS mature section, I just mentioned this for reference purposes).

Therefore, is not really crazy to think that maybe those who struggle with homosexual tendencies are just going through s test put in front of them as a consequence of certain choices they made in the Pre-existence.

Personally I believe the Joseph F Smith is dead wrong about race and pre-existence and is a racist statement. So I have a hard time believing that such things relate to our earthly existence. If we deduce kind of logic then whats to say that an U.S. citizen was more righteous then any other person not born in the states. This is a crazy idea and assumption but such logic as pre-existence "righteousness" can accept this idea. If homosexuality was a pre-existence condition based on our righteousness, then where does environment, biology, earthly experiences come into play? I personally think that by basing things on a life that we do not remember causes assumptions and potentially create a false sense of righteous hierarchy that is based on a lot of assumptions. But that is just my opinion.

The only reason I mentioned President Joseph Fielding Smith was because you asked Gaucho whether his idea came from a GA or not and that you were very hesitant to say who progressed and who did not, well, here a Prophet of the Lord relating pre-existence choices with our lives here on Earth. I am NOT saying is right neither that the subject at hand, homosexuality, is related to a pre-existence obedience or disobedience but just stating that some Prophets have made a connection between the two.

What do you think about the following statement by Elder Cook (recent called Apostle):

QUOTE
The church does take positions on moral issues, and we hope that people will listen to that, whether they be members of the church, or whether they not be members of the church. We did support the constitutional amendment with respect to marriage being between a husband and a wife, and some of the people chose to not take that same position, but they're good faithful members of the church, and they have responsibilities to their constituents as well as to their conscience and to what they believe, and they're in full faith and fellowship with the church.

Can someone be a faithful member of the Church and support gay marriage which the Church believes goes against the Family?

Thanks for that quote from Elder Cook. I believe that a faithful LDS member can support gay marriage. I have come to that conclusion myself and do not feel ashamed or regret for my decision, and have no guilt while taking the sacrament. I came to my decision through honest look at the issue, prayer and and scripture reading. I know many in the faith will disagree, but I am comfortable with that and my decision. However I respect others decisions on this issue and understand why why would disagree with me.

I think that Jospeh Feilding Smith and other prophets were dead wrong about pre-existence connection of race and worthiness. Dead wrong. Remember it was Brigham young that said that if a white person had marriage and intercourse with another person of a different race that they would be struck down dead immediately. We as a church do not have a good civil rights and race record.

The Church really has come a long way from the days of Brigham... I think 'support' and 'acknowledgment' and 'tolerance' are all different things. I see the word support as an action of enabling. Why should I 'support' something that is specifically mentioned as something abominable? I can be tolerant of it, but not give any support to it.
