What the reason for the removal of the Bastard Sword as a weapon In Dungeons & Dragons 5E?

The removal was probably due to the fact that the sword had little difference from a long sword which could give varying damage if held in one hand or two. Could also be yet another reason to justify another edition with something that makes little difference in game play rolleyes.gif.
