For the regular RISK version I have never played the Board version, our online version which is very similar "World GREED" seems to go rather quickly in two player rounds.
Personally, I prefer playing the board version of RISK. I'd definitely recommend it, and it isn't terribly expensive. With RISK, it's less about taking over the world, and more about relaxing with some good friends.
On the flip side, there are several things to enjoy about the Internet version. For one thing, the site I used to play on had close to one hundred different maps to play on. This kept things exciting, and I will admin playing on Middle Earth was more fun than playing on a Napoleonic earth. I've also found that online games move much quicker, because the dice rolls and piece movement is handled for you.
Never been much of a fan of Risk, myself. As noted, it is mostly luck, which I'm not really terribly against as I like games with dice, but it is TOO random, there's no real basis or competency, it's just arbitrary numbers. I'm also not terribly good at strategy, nor resource management, so with all those things stacked against me, I've managed to erect an accepted rule, I'll play Risk once, maybe twice a year if I'm feeling generous. My brain just doesn't seem to work that way. But it is a good, solid, objectively simple game that does require strategic thinking and planning, so I give it good marks - just not for me.
Risk is a very good game, I have a lot of good memories of playing it with my brothers and dad. I know that they have a version for the Xbox 360 that is supposed to be very good. I know that they have different scenarios and factions that can really change the flavor of the game and keep it fresh.

Comments: Those who say RISK is all luck and no strategy just don't know how to play well enough. They tend to be the losers.
