I never encountered these much if at all in D&D, until on the Pool of Radiance goldbox game for the Commodore, where they were pretty common in the overland map. Learning from this, you'd wear armor, as closely flanged as possible, and be ready to watch each other's backs to help pull the Strix's noses out of your flesh before you get all your blood sucked out. They're like vampire "lite", really large mosquitoes. They die just the same with a good solid whack.
I love that you have fought these JPatt. They are very fun to fight and easily added to any campaign.
I just recently discovered them and plan to use them heavily in my next campaign as some sort of plage due to the spring season.
Tactics to defeat them include: Ranged attacks before they reach you (spot helps here), pulling them off friends via strength, killing them outright threw melee attacks.
