At least 20 people have been killed in a military plane crash in the Indonesian city of Medan, CNN affiliate Trans 7 TV reported, citing local hospital officials.

The C-130 Hercules aircraft went down with 12 people on board, said Indonesian military spokesman Maj. Gen. Fuad Basya.

He said the aircraft, built in the U.S. In the 1960s, had been inspected and cleared to fly before it took off from Soewondo Air Force Base.

The crash site is about 3 miles from the air base, he said. Ref. CNN

An Indonesian domestic flight with 54 people on board lost contact with air traffic control in Papua province today, Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency said on Twitter.

The Trigana Air Service flight left Sentani Airport in Jayapura and was headed to Oksibil. Ludi Yantio, a search-and-rescue official, told CNN Indonesia that officials will conduct an air search Monday because it was getting dark. Ref. CNN

Indonesian officials are trying to confirm reports by villagers that the Trigana Air Service plane that went missing today has crashed into a mountain, Indonesia's director general of air transportation said at a news conference.

The plane was carrying 44 adult passengers, five children and five crew members. It was heading from Sentani Airport in Jayapura to Oksibil when contact was lost. Ref. CNN

A Boeing passenger jet carrying 62 people lost contact with air traffic controllers after taking off from Indonesia’s capital on a domestic flight Saturday, according to officials. Sriwijaya Air flight #SJ182, a Boeing 737-500, which took off from Jakarta, was en route to Pontianak, FlightRadar24.com tweeted. It lost more than 10,000 feet in altitude in one minute, four minutes after departure, according to the flight tracking service. Ref. USAToday.
