STUDY: BRAIN STEM DEFECTS MAY CAUSE SIDS

In a small study with big implications, researchers found some of the strongest evidence yet that sudden infant death syndrome -- a medical and sometimes legal mystery once known as cribdeath -- may be caused by brain stem abnormalities.

This will be a big relief for mothers who would hold themselves guilty for not doing 'something' to prevent the death of their baby, at least they know now that the cause was beyond their control.

I am happy that they are starting to find SOME possible causes for SIDS. It must be absolutely horrible to go through, worse than another type of death. SIDS leaves open the possibility that the parents didn't do something right or that it could some how be their fault. If it was a defect, then there is nothing else that could have been done.

Blood of SIDS infants contains high levels of serotonin. Blood samples from infants who died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) had high levels of serotonin, a chemical that carries signals along and between nerves, according to a study. The finding raises the possibility that a test could be developed to distinguish SIDS cases from other causes of sleep-related, unexpected infant death. Source 7m.

Siblings of infants who have died suddenly and unexpectedly at 10-fold risk of same death. The siblings of infants who have died suddenly and unexpectedly run 10 times the risk of dying in the same way, indicates a long term analysis of monitoring data. Source 2v.
