As far our brain is concerned, talking to ourselves in our heads may be fundamentally the same as speaking our thoughts out loud, new research shows. The findings may have important implications for understanding why people with mental illnesses such as schizophrenia hear voices.
I'll talk to myself in my head. For example, I am saying these words in my head as I type. I go over conversations I want to have with my husband before I have them. Through the day, I'll ask myself questions in my head. I don't speak out loud very often, unless there is a reason for me to speak out loud.
