Don't say this or that because it offends me. This ideology that people need to use the exact verbiage so as to not offend others gets tiresome when they change what you should say ever so often. Seriously, if I were to stop every time I heard something that offended me then I would spend a whole load of wasted time on things that slow me down and cause unnecessary grief. Ignore, move on… forget it.
Politically Correct Terms Change All The Time (Hover)
I always thought that much of the politically correct terminology came from people being offended on behalf of other people who didn't care. Which is patronizing and offensive in and of itself.
The remedy is easy. Ask yourself if you are using terminology mostly because you want to put someone in their place. If so then you're not being offensive, you are being a barrier to the progress of society. Be empathic in your word choice and look for chances to give a leg up without necessarily giving a handout.
I must say I agree with you, the political correctness obsession is another thing that started with great intentions, but has become incredibly toxic. In my home town, we're experiencing a particular a-bomb, where in people have gotten so fed-up with the ever-changing "Right" term, that they've began not talking about the individual at all, leading to nearly obsessive levels of alienation towards those people. It's honestly a little sickening.
