Teenagers who access mental health services see significant improvements, study shows
Young people with mental health problems who have contact with mental health services are significantly less likely to suffer from clinical depression later in their adolescence than those with equivalent difficulties who do not receive treatment, according to new research. Ref. Source 6b.
I think this makes intuitive sense. If you get treatment for your issues, you learn how to deal with them in healthy manors and thus live a more fulfilling life. I know that many teenagers have mental health problems, but think they are alone or weird or any number of other issues and thus don't seek help. It is really hard to convince teenagers that what they are experiencing is 'normal' (In some sense) and acceptable and that they should seek treatment or help. Anything more serious than a common cold and almost none of my friends in highschool or college would seek help. Many feared it would cost too much, others thought it would label them a freak of some kind, and the rest were just too complacent (They knew something was wrong, but didn't want help, they liked feeling that way). It is a strange time, but it can set them up for a hard life.
Better outcomes in depression therapy with new innovations in treatment planning. Adolescents with depression who were treated with interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT-A) had significantly better outcomes when their therapists regularly assessed depression symptoms and augmented treatment for insufficient responders after four weeks of therapy rather than waiting until Week 8.
