I think this plane is an attempt to become more efficient in the industry. The thought is fewer flights with more people. This cuts the number of pilots and flight attendants needed which means lower costs. In addition, since the plane is also more fuel efficient, this, too, should lead to lower costs.
So, it might mean less choice in flights, but hopefully at better price. However, it could just mean less choice for passengers and same or higher prices. Often, industries are not good at realizing true savings when they become efficient. It just gives them more leeway to waste money in other areas of the business.
Four previous A380 malfunctions
Rolls-Royce engines on the world's largest airliner malfunctioned four times before one of them disintegrated during flight last week, and aviation experts said that the earlier mishaps may hold clues to design or construction flaws. Ref. Source 7
