CAR SCAMMERS TARGET WEB BUYERS, SELLERS. If you want to buy or sell a car on the Web, watch where you turn. Experts say Internet scam artists are targeting just about every site out there, from eBay to Autotrader, where cars are often bought and sold sight unseen. Ref. Source
Buying a car is one thing I would never do on the Internet. I have to see it in person and test drive it. Sure I will do the shopping online; that is how I found my current Ford Explorer. But unless I can sit in it, turn it on and take it for a spin, I'm not exchanging any money. It's just too much of an investment, and too much of a risk (since cars lose value so quickly) to do eyes closed.
We have done this once, and would never do it again. We bought an 8 seater people carrier off the well known 'bidding' site, and when we got there, wee didn't like it at all.
We were fortunate though, because we were just debating what we were going to do with it, after having done a 400 mile round trip to collect it, when we got home, a neighbor of ours 'fell in love' with it, and offered us cash on the spot for it!
Mechanically there was nothing wrong with it, it was just a matter of personal taste, so we sold it on to him, and everyone was happy! (and they still have it now, 2 years on.)
