The kind of water filters typically sold at walmart, like Brita, are frankly one step removed from being a scam. They don't do enough, and they don't do it long enough. They're designed to keep you coming back for replacements. I suggest investing in something that'l last a good while.
Basic Brita filter system: $40, lasts 40 gallons, is rated rather poorly in regards to anything other than large particulate removal.
Basic Berkey ceramic filter system: $200 for 2 "Candles" and a multiple gallon filter setup, each "Candle" lasts 3,000 gallons, and is rated as a virus grade purifier.
The latter option looks like a winner to me. Especially since you can get just the ceramic filters, pick up a pair of food grade buckets along with a spigot, and set up a slightly uglier but just as functional version of the $200 system for around $80.
