Out on the main Interstates the speed limit was 70 MPH when I drove through. Secondary roads if 4 lane were up to 65 otherwise they were 55 MPH. In towns the speeds varied from town to town anywhere from 25 to 30 in most residential areas and 35-45 in the main arteries through the town.
The problem I always had in TN was the roads were often in poor repair. So, although the speed limit is 70 MPH, you better know what you are doing when you drive that fast… or when you drive the 80 MPH you'll drive when you take your ten over the limit most Americans take… me included. And I may take a bit more than that on occasion. .
This is why I do not take ten over. Most people do and they are not good enough drivers at those speeds. I set my cruise at about 6 over and sit back and relax as I drive. I get there safely and almost just as fast. I never noticed bad roads in Tennessee. I always had good roads.
