ATV-related injuries in children remain large public health problem
All-terrain vehicle-related injuries remain a large public health problem in this country, with children more adversely affected than adults. According to researchers, the major risk factors for young riders also are entirely preventable. Ref. Source 6y.
So many people want a ATV and they have no idea of what they are doing or how to be safe on them. Then they go buy some for their kids who are even more reckless due to that "Nothing bad would ever happen to me" complex and then we see kids getting severely injured or killed. I think a training course is needed for people to be able to buy a ATV but many will say that is not fair.
Yeah, there are enough dangers for kids that parents don't need to add more. I can see doing this with kids in a very controlled environment, with very specific rules, and with parental supervision. And for me it has to be parent… not just any old adult. But I'm a bit of a worrier.
There were several people in my high school years who died from accidents involving ATVs, and yet I know a lot of people who still think they are wonderful. In fact, one of my ex boyfriend's had a dent in his thigh from an ATV falling on him (As in there was literally a rod-shaped indent across his thigh that had never gone away). I don't really see the appeal of something that seems to end in death or injury more often then not.
Yes that is because many feel they are like a car or a 4X4 truck that they can take off road and play in mud and dirt. The issue is without proper instruction these vehicles can be very dangerous but people do not take the time to learn to ride them correctly and safely.
