With an estimated 26,000 people calling Los Angeles sidewalks, cars and storm drains home, city officials on Tuesday approved an expanded campaign to help the homeless this winter by opening public buildings as temporary shelters and allowing people to sleep inside vehicles in designated lots. Housing gift lands homeless man in jail
A nonprofit’s attempt to provide a miniature house for a homeless man downtown lasted only a couple of nights before San Diego police officers arrested him and hauled the structure away. "It was nice," he said. "Loved my house. I want my house back." Ref. Source 2j
Homeless youth receive holiday cheer
Dozens of homeless children at the East County Transitional Living Center in El Cajon received warm clothing, blankets and linens. Volunteers needed to count homeless
Some 300 volunteers are needed for the county’s annual homeless headcount on Jan. 29. The census, conducted by the San Diego Regional Task Force on the Homeless, helps determine where to direct federal funds. Last year’s count found 8,742 homeless in the county. Ref. Source 1n.
