They would do nothing but argue and then blame each other when nothing got done. And to make matters worse, they'd show up at my house, since they never finished their own due to arguing, and when I turn them away so I could survive they'd call me prejudiced.

Yes, it would be a fascinating experience, to go where few people had gone before. I don't think it will happen in my lifetime, but it would be very interesting to do. I am sure that the Mars community would be filled with interesting adventurous people as well, so life on Mars would not be boring.

I can't see why the same cannot be done on the moon or a desert first unless there is some imminent danger to the earth that they haven't told us about.

I agree, an antarctic or undersea or a desert colony would be a good start. Also an orbital space colony. The gravity on the moon would be quite low, whereas a space station would have artificial gravity due to centrifugal motion.
