MAN WHO SHOT POPE FREED
The man who tried to kill Pope John Paul II nearly 25 years ago was released from a Turkish prison on Thursday.

To me, these two statements do not mesh:

BBC television news had a report saying the Pope, John Paul II, had publicly forgiven him when he was alive and even visited him in jail. After the visit the Pope confirmed that the professional killer was part of a grander plot by an actual government to kill him, but that has not been verified.
On the history channel biography of Pope John Paul II said that this event did happen by word of the Popes own claim to have forgiven him. The culprit himself claims he was forgiven also. Of course this was all second hand regarding the popes comments, but its a wonderful story of forgiveness either way. I personally could not forgive someone who shot me. I would want him punished to the fullest extent of the law, and then some.

The Turkish man convicted of shooting Pope John Paul II was taken back into custody on Friday after an appeals court ruled he had to serve more time for other crimes.

This is a very interesting twist to the attempted assassination of the Pope. The fact that the Russian government was actually behind it proves how influential the Pope was, not only to religion, but politics. I wonder what ramifications this will have in foreign relations for the Russians, especially when dealing with European countries such as Italy?
