John McCain Announces Catholic Leadership Team Featuring Pro-Life Stalwarts

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Republican presidential candidate John McCain announced a new Catholic leadership team on Thursday that features several pro-life lawmakers and advocates. The team is McCain's latest effort to try to develop more support among the pro-life community since his campaign has experienced a recent upswing in the polls. McCain starts off the team with the backing of two political leaders who have been behind him for months -- pro-life Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, a former president candidate himself, and former Gov. Frank Keating of Oklahoma. "As Catholics, we are proud to announce our support for John McCain, a genuine American hero with a conservative record who has what it takes to lead this country," Brownback said in a statement the McCain campaign sent to LifeNews.com. Keating, who recently introduced the Arizona senator to a national conference call of Catholic pro-life advocates, said McCain "can uniquely appeal to Catholics with his strong, 24-year pro-life record." "These are exactly the type of qualities that Catholic voters will be looking for in 2008," he added. The includes several pro-life lawmakers including former U.S. Senator Mike DeWine of Ohio, who helped lead the Congressional effort to ban partial-birth abortions.

Catholic Newspaper Says John McCain Better on Abortion Than Barack Obama

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- One of the leading Catholic newspapers in the country has issued a new editorial saying John McCain is significantly better on abortion than his likely Democratic opponent Barack Obama. The paper says both deserve scorn for backing embryonic stem cell research but point out that McCain has a very strong pro-life stance on abortion. The National Catholic Register, in its March issue, looks at the presidential landscape. It notes that McCain isn't as well liked by conservative Republicans as Obama and Hillary Clinton are liked by liberal Democrats. However, as Catholics, the editors say they're not as concerned about conservative political philosophy as they are about Catholic teachings. And no Catholic teaching, when it comes to political issues, is more important than opposing abortion. The Register noted the Catholic bishops have said abortion "must always be rejected and opposed and must never be supported or condoned" and added that the right to life is a fundamental one more important than others. "In other words, abortion is the preeminent issue. A Catholic's obligation is to cast the vote that will best advance the culture of life," the editors say. With that in mind, the Register says there's little choice but to prefer McCain over Obama when it comes to abortion.

John McCain Meets Pro-Life Catholic Leaders, Pledges to Oppose Abortion

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Presidential candidate John McCain met with pro-life Catholic leaders in Philadelphia Wednesday, according to Catholic columnist Deal Hudson. The meeting also included a private time McCain had with Priests for Life director, Father Frank Pavone, who said McCain pledge to carry the pro-life mantle. The meeting with Catholic leaders and lay members was held at the venerable Union League. Hudson explains in a new column that the meeting is one McCain will hold with Catholic and pro-life leaders in other parts of the nation as he seeks to build support for his candidacy within the pro-life community. "Before his remarks, McCain met privately with Rev. Frank Pavone," Hudson said. "The first issue addressed by McCain was abortion," Hudson wrote. McCain said the "noblest words ever written" were "the inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." He said he believes those words "apply to the unborn." McCain "reminded the Philadelphia Catholics of his pro-life voting record, adding that he would 'maintain that commitment' if elected president," Hudson wrote. Hudson said McCain discussed the "stark contrast" between himself and pro-abortion Sen. Barack Obama on pro-life issues. As evidence, McCain cited Obama's opposition to the ban on partial-birth abortion and his opposition, as a state senator, to legal protection for babies born during an abortion procedure.
