Is The Bible Perfect

You know, I could have sworn there was a thread on this already, but I couldn't find it.

So my question is to christians in general, primarily protestants, catholics, and evangelicals.

1. Is the Bible perfect?

2. Why is it perfect?

3. Where does the claim of perfection come from, does it come from the Bible itself, or somewhere else?

4. Does is HAVE to be perfect, and if so, why does it have to be perfect?

Perfect Bible Is

This thought has caused a lot of different questions in my mind today. After much thought I will give my OPINION.

Yes the Bible is perfect.

The Bible is perfect because an event or explanation for every scenario, question, trial, or life event is covered in at least one book within It's contents.

My ideas of the Bible being perfect is partially based on the Bible itself as well as within my faith. A defined perfection could possibly be different for anyone and everyone. I will have to admit personally that the perfection that I see in the Bible is strongly influenced by my faith of the Father and the Son. It is from that faith that I see the perfection in many things.

For one's faith to be true I believe that the Bible MUST be perfect. Without perfection it is too easy for someone to read deeply into one book within the Bible to understand what they wish to understand while having disbelief in another that does not say what they want to.

Offtopic but, I am very curious as to see how deep this thread is taken.

Even though this is way out of my field of expertise, I find the question very interesting. I think the question itself is flawed, in as much as there is no real way to define perfection.

I have no intention to belittle the beliefs of others, but I have a lot of trouble in a blank statement that anything can be 'perfect'.

I can't see that a book can be described as perfect, as it is not possible to answer every question, to have a format for dealing with every situation, or for advice on anything outside the scope of the writers realm of existence.

Now I guess this is where the believers are going to present the 'fact' that the bible was written by a group of people surrounded by miracles, and nothing is outside the realm of their existence. Believe as you will. We are all individuals.

I have a very high threshold for classifying 'perfection', and could never possibly label a book as perfect. So I guess my answer to your original question is 'no, I do not believe the bible is perfect.'

Perfect Bible Is

I don't believe that the Bible is perfect, nor do I think it contains everything that God has to say to us. For one thing, the Bible never makes the slightest claim that it is either perfect or even complete. Another thing is that the Bible refers to several books and documents, treating them as scripture, but they aren't included in the Bible.

Finally, the perfection of the Bible should have nothing to do with a person's faith or lack of it. It teaches us about Jesus Christ, and gives us plenty of information to approach God through prayer and learn the truth for ourselves. In fact, in several places, that is what it tells us to do.

I don't believe at all that it covers information regarding all types of events, scenarios, or questions. For example, it doesn't answer this very question.

This is the definition I am working with. The answers so far are very interesting. I one, I see that if it is not perfect, than it is free to go deeply into the book and interpret as you want. However, that is exactly what happens today, you can see that in the many different sects of christianity. As for the fellow agnostic who posted, we could not disagree more.

Perfection can be defined, so I will use the definition above as that is how I was raised regarding the Bible. In this discussion of perfection of the Bible, I will stay away from such things as "does the bible have all the answers?" because that is beyond such things as the perfection I am referring too. If we start discussing whether the Bible has the answers to everything, then you can veer off into Bible code and areas that I would like to stay away from.

As for another statement that the perfection of the Bible does effect a persons faith, again, I couldn't agree less. Nighthawk, your faith involves continuing revelation from God through prophets and other scriptures, but most other christianity takes that only the Bible is that revelation. In that, having only one book of scripture, then the Bible must be perfect. If its not, then some of what is written may be wrong. If that is the case, then the rest of it is also subject to questions as to which parts are wrong. And then, who decides what is what amongst them, and what if the opinions are different?

Bwren asked how deep this would go, I would love to see it go as deep as it can, so I will leave others to post opinions, but I think that the boundaries needed to be clarified.

I too would like to see this subject go deep.

In my humble opinion the Bible is not perfect. The Old Testament is very fallible and contradicts itself many times. Millions of humans died because of one religion or another fighting for control. The New Testament is largely written history and teaches love beyond human understanding. I will never understand marrying Old and New Testament and making it one book.

I don't remember any claim of perfection in the Bible. I also would like to know where the idea of perfection came from.

No. It doesn't have to be perfect. At least one religion I know of disregards the Old Testament all together to teach the New Testament only.
