Supreme Court blocks redistricting plan that 'packed' black voters

The justices ruled 5-4 that maps drawn by Alabama's Republican-controlled Legislature cannot be allowed to stand. Democrats and black state legislators in Alabama claimed the Legislature drew district lines that intentionally packed African Americans into a few districts, so others would be more accommodating to Republicans. Which ever one of these two wins this seat will stay Republican and fairly conservative at that.

I heard that the Alabama legislature has voted in a new law that protects its state monuments. I think it is sad that a state has to pass a law to protect monuments.

I agree with you about this KN.

Rather off topic, but...
Ya know, there's a group of African Americans in Dallas that are trying to protect monuments to Confederate soldiers. They said they aren't afraid of Robert E Lee, that it's part of our history, that they are monuments to brave men, and that this helps the healing process. Tearing them down just tries to hide a past that happened… let's remember it and move on. Anyway, I hope more people start to think like this group.

Republican Roy Moore did not concede to Democrat Doug Jones in the US Senate race as he addressed supporters Tuesday in Montgomery, Alabama -- even after CNN and other networks projected Jones the winner and Jones declared victory.

"When the vote is this close ... It's not over," Moore said.

Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill told CNN that, while results are not yet certified, it is highly likely Jones will be the winner.

Shortly after Jones was projected to be the winner, President Trump tweeted, "Congratulations to Doug Jones on a hard fought victory. The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win." Ref. CNN.
