87 Year Old Violent Criminal

What is this world coming to? An 87 year old man shot a nurse at a nursing home in the face and threatened to shoot another.

Now, I wonder. Because of his age, will people decide this "poor old man" was justified in his anger and so we should take pitty on him? Will we turn the victims into villians? Often when a crime is committed by someone so advanced in years, we think of our grandparents and then are much more sympathetic than we would if the person committing the crime was younger.

What do you think about such things and this story in particular?

Wow, what a terrible story. I checked the link and other web sites to find more information but I could not. Of course, I cannot justify what this man did, he must have been in a mental status to do something like that! *shaking head* and I do agree with you Tena about people being more sympathetic just because of the age of the individual. I have seen cases like this in Argentina where they found a nazi who was very closed to Hitler, the guy was really old and ended up in jail once they discovered who he was and some people were feeling sorry for him because of his age, I did not. He MUST be responsible for the crimes he committ, no matter what. The same is happening with Pinochet in Chile and other past dictators in Argentina. Justice must be served and this 87 year old man must also pay for what he did.

This story hits home as I have a grandfather who's in a nursing home, entering the latter stages of Parkinson's. They call the place an "assisted living" place or something similar, but I have a desire to call it "just waiting for these poor folks to die" when I hear about how people are treated in these environments.

But to avoid totally drifting away from topic, I am curious as to the man's "state of mind" as many folks in these homes suffer from dementia among other things.. The article seems incomplete in this regard, though it does indirectly touch on a larger issue: conditions in nursing homes.

Unless the man was attack, I see no justification in the action, but hopefully a greater awareness of nursing home conditions will arise from this issue (or at least something similarly positive--I loathe sad stories in the news).

The fact that the man had a gun in his possession whilst visiting his loved one says a lot. Most 87-year-old men I know don't walk around with concealed weapons. So, in my opinion, and the story doesn't say this, I would assume that he had already been aware of the conditions generally and the poor quality of care for his loved one (probably his wife, but that is also not clear in the articles). He planned it, in other words.

And while I completely understand his anger and emotions about how his wife was being cared for (because I have a loved one in long-term nursing care), he is not justified in shooting the nurses!

There are other ways to make a statement. Shooting someone in the face is a bit of a extreme. The media love stories like this...there are other ways!

Murder is murder...the guy should pay the price no mater what his age. He is A LOT older than 18 and should know far better. Obviously, in this case, age does not equate to wisdom.
