Seems simple enough to me that several western countries share many of the same values as Isreal and support their efforts. The western countries and Israel work together well and we enjoy our diplomacy. Honest, diplomacy and dialog are extremely difficult with nations like Iran and Syria for western countries. Is there a limit? IMO, Isreal came close to crossing that line with Lebanon in their relationship with the US.
Offtopic but, Talking about anit-israeal sentiment. It was strange to me at the time. I was going through cultural training before my assignment in Japan. My instructor was from Jordan. We spent a bit of time discussing Mid-East Politics and of course the topic of Isreal and Palistine came up. He expressed his dislike of Isreal's treatment of the Palestinians to which I agreed it was a bad situation. I asked him why he thinks that the Palestinians didn't take the agreement that was proposed by the Clinton Administration, since it guaranteed a Palestinian state. He then proceeded to tell me it was their land, so why did they have to take only part of it. I mentioned that the Jews have some claim to that land if you go back far enough too...so who is right. Then I asked him one other question... If the Palestinians and friends (Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Transjordan, Holy War Army, Arab Liberation Army, and local Arabs) had succeeded in defeating Isreal back in 1947, one day after the new state was declared by the UN, would we be talking about the poor isrealies in camps or would there be any israelies to talk about? I told him when you wage war on another group, you are putting your country on the table against the other country. If you win, to the victor goes the spoils. You can take as much or as little as you want. If you lose, your best hope is that they let you just go back to the way things were before, but you can lose everything. |
