It is good that our leaders are becoming more specific on recent issues.

Last Sunday in Hawaii, thousands of Church members statewide heard their
prophet warn against the scourge of the illegal drug "ice." President
Gordon B. Hinckley was in Hawaii to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the
Polynesian Cultural Center. In speaking to the youth, he told them to guard
themselves against one of the state's most critical
problems--crystal methamphetamine addiction--by refusing to try the
drug even once.

Yes it's the drug of today, I use to smoke a lot of cannabis & seen a lot of hard drugs pass me by I was to scared to try it because I know I would of been addicted to it. since becoming a member I am truly grateful that I don't do that crap any more, sadly I have seen many of my so called friends waste away to these hard drugs in New Zealand we have labs where the drug "P" is being made, it's slowly killing the minds of youth & YSA members & non members. It is true, when you hear a druggie say one taste is all it takes and before you know it your either selling yourself or doing some kind of criminal activity to keep the habit.
Thanks for sharing your story Mature. I notice Pres. Hinckley's talks to the Youth are specific about drugs, he even mentions the names and all. This didn't not happen years ago in the Church which it is a sign that is a affecting a lot to our Youth and adults in the Church.
I've noticed that in a lot of talks about drugs and immorality the presidency has become more blunt about what we should and should not be doing, and I really appreciate it. I think that all too often the Saints are thought to be too innocent to be spoken to directly. But this just lets people dance the line and rationalize sin because the general authorities weren't specific enough.
I think everything centers on the family. If kids don't feel like they are cared about then they tend to stray more often, whether they do so by experimenting with drugs or other things. Of course parents can do all that they can and their children still have their agency, but people are more likely to stay on the straight and narrow if they have good guidance through parents. Maybe the drug problems are just another result of the disintegration of the family.
Yes Moo, that's so true. I think also when the Prophet and other General Authorities talk so directly about the use of these drugs, is also a way to let the Youth know that they are watching what they are doing and even though they (the youth) think that the Prophet and other authorities are old, they know perfectly what's going on in the world, specially in the youth of our Church. I think it helps so much to the children when you speak to them in that way rather than to make it sound 'light' or 'soft'.
MISUSE OF DRUGS TAKING A HEAVY TOLL ON UTAHNS
A new federal survey of drug deaths in Utah reiterates what counselors and drug-abuse experts have been warning of for years -- the lure of abusing painkillers is deadly.
