Articles Of Faith

This is a general topic about what the Articles of Faith are, and what they are for.

The Articles of Faith come from a letter written by Joseph Smith, answering some questions that he was asked. These short statements were later included in our scriptures because they so clearly explain our basic beliefs.

"...on October 6, 1890, the Latter-day Saints, in general conference assembled, readopted the Articles as a guide in faith and conduct." (Articles of Faith, James E. Talmage )

I don't believe that they are meant to be scripture, as there is no indication that Joseph Smith ever claimed to have received them by revelation. However, there is a lot of revelation and scripture to support each of these statements.

Well, that's debatable. He did not have the need to say he has received them by revelation. The fact that the Articles of Faith is part of the Pearl of Great Price and this book of Scripture became a standard work of the Church in 1880, it's clearly that the Articles of Faith are in fact considered Scripture. They are not separated from any of the books, they are included in the Scriptures.
