I remember reading many years ago a statement by the Church stating they support death penalty (A very old letter). Did the Church change position with regards to this topic?

Yes there is an old statement supporting death penalty. I haven't seen a recent one for a long time (Same with birth control). I think the present position is "no position".

The fact that the modern church states that they have no position on the matter means they have disassociated themselves from the old position that supported death penalty,

As some members of this forum said here the church has no official position although I lean towards thinking that they support it (Entirely my view).
