"While residing in Kirtland Elder Reynolds Cahoon had a son born to him. One day when President Joseph Smith was passing his door, he called the Prophet in and asked him to bless and name the baby. Joseph did so and gave the boy the name of Mahonri Moriancumer. When he had finished the blessing he laid the child on the bed, and turning to Elder Cahoon he said, "The name I have given your son is the name of the brother of Jared; the Lord has just shown [or revealed] it to me." Elder William F. Cahoon "¦ heard the Prophet make this statement to his father; and this was the first time the name of the brother of Jared was known in the Church in this dispensation" (George Reynolds, "The Jaredites," Juvenile Instructor, 1 May 1892, 282). |

13 And now I proceed with my record; for behold, it came to pass that the Lord did bring Jared and his brethren forth even to that great sea which divideth the lands. And as they came to the sea they pitched their tents; and they called the name of the place a Moriancumer; and they dwelt in tents, and dwelt in tents upon the seashore for the space of four years. |

Comments: I have thought that perhaps they didn't name him because the keepers of the record were Jared's direct descendents. If I remember correctly, that pattern occurs more than once in the Book of Ether.

Comments: Yeah, here's a thought for you: it wasn't written in English.
Unless you do a letter or symbol of count of the original language, you're not getting anywhere with that reasoning.

Title: The Brother of Jared
Comments: The information about language needs to be clarified. The story of Mahonri Moriancumer is found in the book of Ether. Ether wrote the account 100's possibly thousands of year later so it is unlikely that Ether spoke (or wrote Adamic). The book of Ether is Moroni's abridgment of Ether's record and he spoke a version of Hebrew and wrote in reformed Egyptian. The phrase "The brother of Jared" is an old fashioned English translation, we are much more likely to just say Jared's brother than "The brother of Jared" nowadays. Of note is the section found in Ether 3:16-19 where Moroni uses the phrase "The man" referring to the brother of Jared several times rather than using his name. He never mentions that he has been commanded to withhold his name as he was with the three Nephites, so I think it most likely that he kept his name to save space on the plates. Whatever language you use "Man" is much easier to write than "Mahonri Moriancumer".

Title: Brother of Jared
Comments: It is interesting to note that for some unknown reason Reynolds Cahoon never again asked the Prophet to name any of his children for him.
