John D. Lee Controversial Statue

Since 2004 this statue cannot find a home...Why? Because John D. Lee, adoptive son of Brigham Young was found as the only responsible for the Mountain Meadows Massacre.

QUOTE
SALT LAKE CITY Since 2004, Jerry Anderson's bronze likeness of controversial Mormon pioneer settler John D. Lee has been without a home.
The 6-foo-6 statue was supposed to go up outside Washington City offices. But the city changed its mind after complaints the statue would honor a killer.

Lee was the only person held responsible for the Mountain Meadows Massacre _ the slaughter of 120 men, women and children from an Arkansas wagon train on Sept. 11, 1857.

Now it seems the mothballed statue could soon have a home.

Renovation plans for Fort Harmony include a spot for the statue. Lee helped build the fort in 1854.
