QUOTE (LDSCyn)
Just an idea JB, maybe you shouldn't let the children eat in your class.

They do not eat during class, like I said it is a designated 'snack time' it I like a five minute break where the whole Primary chows down and then it is back to class or sharing time or whatever.

Class Eating Children Primary

JB's suggestion to hang w/ my kids is a good one. I'll probably be there 6 maybe 7 minutes before I get called as a Primary teacher. I guess that'd be OK.

In the past, I've pulled them out and kept them with me in 2nd and 3rd hours. Doing that for 2 or 3 Sundays seems to make an impression. The teachers will then refrain from Candy for 2 or 3 months.

My children won't die from their food intolerances. But they may spend a day or two wishing they would.

Even when I was in primary in Canada I never was BRIBED to keep quiet! I dont ever remember food in the class. There was food for Primary activities only.
In the hundreds of times I have seen food distributed to kids in our ward, the snacks were healthy.... maybe 15 times.

I was primary age in the '70s. Candy didn't exist, except for Christmas time and in the general store. Now, every 3rd adult carries enough to populate their food storage. Like television, many live as if they couldn't live without it.

The adults in the hall are the hardest to stop. Their technique is so good, you never see your kid get the red dye bar until it's in his mouth. Then the fun begins, one way or the other.

I wish we could get a regular announcement from the stand, or in the bulletin. I've asked repeatedly, but the Bishopric seems to be wary of insulting anyone. After all, I keep coming back, even though my boys often pay an awful price.

It's no different in elementary and middle schools. Every child (I have 5), every class has someone handing it out. The adults will protect their right to give candy as if it were the most important teaching tool they had. Perhaps it was.

I need to say here, that our local school board voted to ban Candy in the classroom last year. What great news that was for us. They also improved the lunch room choices. You never heard such grumbling, and not from the students. The early results are that there has been an overall reduction in behavior problems. Oh yea, the kids act better too!

I remember something similar coming through the Primary leadership channels about the same time. I think it came from the Stake, but I could be mistaken. Again, more grumbling and then a return to things as before.

Thanks for the advice and support. I'm grateful to exchange with people who put reason above comfort.

Well I can tell you that sitting in with my son helps to control a lot of things. One Sunday I even avoided him getting some chocolates laced with alcohol (yep, but don't ask me here, I will leave that for the LDS Mature Board).

Comments: I think that there needs to be a designated snack time half way through primary where children need a 5 minute break to have a drink and a biscuit or a piece of fruit and a drink of juice. This stimulates the child to concentrate more. After all the children have already sat in church for an hour then a primary lesson. They definitely need a snack break! Could people let me know what they think?

I agree for kids in Nursery and Sunbeams (3 years olds) but for kiddies older than that, not. It is sad to see Primary kids coming to Church with a lunch kit like if they were in school! It is also sad to keep hearing during the primary class "when is time for snacks? when is time for snacks?". The food had become the center of their purpose in Primary.

I don't really mind little kids eating, they are little kids. Kids can learn how to change and learn how to hold of that hunger until lunch time. If Jesus can fast for 40 days and night, I'm pretty sure we can last 3 hours without food easily.

I always say if kids (no nursery age) have a good breakfast on Sunday morning they can wait for three hours without problems. What is happening is that most parents bring junk food to entertain them, hence it is not really that they are hungry for fruits or veggies rolleyes.gif but for salty snacks and candies!
