LDS Hymnbook & Amazing Grace

Why isn't the famous hymn Amazing Grace within the LDS Hymnbook?

Grace Amazing and Hymnbook Lds

I think the song has a couple of things that don't match the lds theology (you know is quite "protestant" specially about salvation) you know what am I saying?. I believe I read somewhere that Emma had it on her first hymnbook but Phelps was the one assigned to make corrections so I ain't sure if she removed it or he did it 'cause she came out with several hymnbooks during the years.

I often wondered about that myself. I think the song is beautiful, and it really spoke to me during my conversion and it was actually sung at my baptism. I think it's a great song about faith and hope in God.

Here are lyrics to it:

international QUOTE (Amazing Grace)

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
"Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
"Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far
And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
and mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who call'd me here below,
Will be forever mine.

When we've been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we'd first begun.

I can imagine that some may not like it because it focuses so much on Grace. But we as Saints do believe in Grace, but combined with works. Neither one alone can save us. The Book of Mormon says we will be saved by Grace after we have done all that we could. So I don't necessarily see it as not agreeing with LDS theology. Let me know if there are any other parts that are funky that I may have missed.

But given that we do include some protestant songs in our song books that don't all fully agree with LDS thought (I can't remember which one it was, but we sang one at church the other day), I don't see why it should not be included. I think if we maybe change the lines ""Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far
And grace will lead me home." it'd be fine. I guess nobody that was in charge of the hymnbook like it or it has some sort of copyright on it that I'm not aware of.

The last verse kind of gives a different idea of lds theology where we believe in eternal progression, the last verse doesn't seem to agree with that. I love the song eh I think it should be included.

Comments: The reason I have found over and over has nothing to do with doctrine. All the songs in our hymnals are voted on in committee. Amazing Grace didn't make the vote due to space constraints. Maybe it will make it the next time around.
