Avg Anti-virus - Page 2

As an update to above:

1. It seems that AVG has now fixed its' download server. I was able to make two downloads which it considers optional, but I consider essential - adjusting the scheduler and something about setup. This corrected #2 and #3 above. Now I do not know why these would be considered optional downloads, nevertheless you need to click update manually if you are going to have them as the program will not give it to you on its' own.

2. It is still hoggish with resources.

Anti-virus Avg

I have had AVG for a while, I haven't noticed it being a memory hog. I used to use Norton anti-virus but it really was an annoying program. AVG is both free and hands off. I love it and wouldn't use anything else.

Those of you using version 7.5 or less will need to upgrade to version 8 as the updates to all former versions will be stopped at the end of this month. By the way, when you are notified you are taken to a page where they try to sell you the pro versions. Here is the direct link to download the free version: https://www.grisoft.com/ww.93825.tpl-mcr1

I think what attracted people to AVG was the 'freeness' of it, it also is not a memory hog as other anti virus programs. I too was caught up in the free version and recommended it to other people. If you are an average internet user, you know just checking email, doing some research and stuff, then AVG is not a bad way to go. In my experience though it has not picked up a lot of the nasty viruses that float around the internet and I even had a version that 'crashed' because of a virus. Now don't get me wrong, it is a decent antivirus program, just not for user like myself. JB I am surprised that an internet user like yourself is using this program, I think you should consider Bitdefender or Kaspersky. McAfee is not too bad and Symantec Corporate Edition is decent too. Yeah Symantec are the same people who made Norton but this version is not the memory hog as Norton and it doesn't expire. Anyways this is an AVG thread, sorry about the rambling. Average user = no problem and the best part is that it is free.

P.S. Saw the new version not too long ago, it looks very cool and still updates very quickly. Nice if you don't have a fast connection.

You mean... You do not know my security practices so you assume that is all I use, is that what you are trying to say? wink.gif to me anti-virus is actually a LAST resort. If you have things in place then there will be no need for viruses in your system, but that is another Thread.

Phew got me scared there for a minute wink.gif right back at ya.

I have an idea of what you are talking about though, the security measures in place, and you are right but back to AVG, I recently installed it on a person's computer and I find that it is much more 'eye pleasing' now and it is a lot more user friendly. Seems that it is the way of software now, make it attractive and user friendly. With AVG you can 'set it and forget it'. It updates itself and schedules scans on your system and because it is free, it wont expire on you. I think it only prompts you to upgrade but that's about it and if you have to install a new version, it uninstalls the last one for you and then installs the new one. Cant get better than that eh? As I said though AVG is not for me, it good for the average user and my internet usage is anything but average.
