Comments: Wow some of these remarks are very telling. First do not be so sure that God ordered the Genocide of Cannon. (That is what it is and we should use that term. ) There is 2 traditions in the old testament as to how Israel obtained the promised land. There is the tradition in Joshua which describes an immoral genocide, and the account in judges which tells a much more realistic story. When we read Judges (And the rest of the O. T. For that matter)we see very quickly that the people of Cannon are still there in the lands, after the death of Joshua see Jud. 1:1. This idea really counters what Joshua says. (See and compare jos. 12:16, jud. 1:22; josh 12:21, Jud. 1;27 there are over 20 references that show contradictions but space is limited to show more). What this shows is that perhaps the book of Joshua is over stating this quite a bit. This is not uncommon for text of this period to do so. So I really find it hard to believe that this genocide actually happened like Joshua describes.
Now for the theological concerns. Lets for a minute forget about the killings of the children and women of the Cannonites, and focus on the Israelites.
QUOTE Its better the some people die to save more people latter. I think this is Jack Bauer's theme.
Lets talk about this idea. Here is a god that commands the killing of children, animal, woman and man. Lets talk about how this was done. Remember Israel has no metal weapons at this point. They are using rocks, clubs, and weapons that do not make clean cuts. They are beating, clubbing babies with rocks, and crude blunt objects, splattering brains, and blood all over themselves, and taking several hits to kill while the children are screaming while they are being clubbed. This is brutal. (Yes it is hard to read but we must see it for what it is to get a grasp of what we are inferring God commanded. ) Now my question is, what kind of mental and emotional scarring does this do to God's chosen people? Why would God allow his chosen people to have such post traumatic syndrome, ruining there lives, and their children's lives and destroy families by participating in such violent acts?
If you do not see this, then you never have seen war. Just look at the U. S. Solders coming home with post-traumatic syndrome. See how the war has affected them, even with the minimal fighting that was done with weapons that "kill cleanly. " Look at the rise of divorce among returning vets and how the war has hurt their families. Look at the homeless rate and mental illness among returning vets. Why would God command his chosen people to endure this while risking the righteousness he is trying to establish? To me this seems counter productive to God's vision of a righteous people. For those who watch 24, you can see how this life has done to Jack. He suffers in the show, he is dead to life, his family hates him, and he is alone. He is like the walking dead working on auto pilot for some unattainable idea of duty. He is a tragic character.
