OAXACA, Mexico - Gabriel Lopez Gonzalez was 14 when the first group of missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints arrived in his town. He was immediately impressed. Gabriel followed the missionaries as they knocked on doors in the community, and as he spent more time with the missionaries and listened to their message, Gabriel decided to join the Church. He wasn't alone. Today, the town of 28,000 inhabitants has a thriving community of some 200 Latter-day Saints.

I love the Mexican Mormons! These sweet saints are so devoted and faithful, and we have a Spanish-speaking branch here in our stake. Whenever we attend baptisms for the stake primary, more of the children are of Mexican descent than American! My daughter was the only little blonde child in the group at her baptism. Quite often at the temple, I will see brothers and sisters with the translator equipment. I have an aunt and uncle currently serving a mission at the Mexico City temple visitor's center, and they write quite often with special stories of the faithfulness of the saints there.

Mormons in Mexico confront violence with hope and faith

"Unfortunately, violence has changed our lives in Juarez," said Gabriel Saenz, a returned missionary living in Juarez. "It's not the same; I just came back from my mission in Chile and things are totally different (here). There's a lot of violence and people are worried for their safety, even members of the church.
