Is Meteorology - Climatology a popular subject of study in Iowa? Who are some of the most known atmospheric sciences people from Iowa?

In Iowa which natural occurrence happens the most often: storms, flooding, earthquake, blizzards, drought, heat or cold wave, and so forth?

In the winter months it is common to have blizzards and severe winter storms. It is easy to lose ones life if you are caught outside in the Iowa winter storms if you are not prepared. We can see temps as low as -40 degrees in the winter but tend to stay in the highs of upper 20s and lows in the single digits above zero.
In the spring and summer Iowa is known for severe thunderstorms with tornado activity possible.
While this can seem to make Iowa seem dangerous it is a beautiful state. Being on the eastern edge of the great plains we get a variety of weather but it leaves the state green and it is great for growing crops.
I do not know of any great meteorologists who have grown up here but most Iowans have a saying about the weather. If you do not like it wait it will change.
