Children & Guns - Page 3

Gun safety programs do not prevent children from handling firearms. Researchers have found that children who participate in gun safety programs do not retain the skills they learned and that most still will approach a firearm in an unsupervised setting. While confirming that such programs are still essential, they stress that parents are the front line of defense when it comes to safeguarding their children from accidental shootings -- and that they cannot rely on safety training alone. 40% of gun owners reported not locking all guns, even around kids. Gun owners will go to events to get free devices for locking up their firearms at home, but a survey of nearly 3,000 participants at such events in Washington found that 40% had unlocked guns at home, and the presence of children in the home did not make a difference. That is just irresponsible to know that there are children in the house and you can be so haphazard with a weapon that can kill them or even you as the parent.

I grew up on a farm. We had unsecured firearms in my parent's room, but no child entered that on fear of death. Some even had actions removed so they weren't instantly ready fot use. What we didn't have was unsecured ammunition. That was always locked up. As I aged, the laws for firearm storage changed to be terribly strict. I always remember though that my parents had common sense and kept the batteries away from the toys, so to speak.

Guns and Children

Things are way different now. Children are making children so there is no safety on things. Parents who don't take serious safety precautions should be held liable for anything their children do.
