What do you think was the reason for some characters wearing sunglasses / sun shades in the Matrix and others not?

Personally, I feel the people who wore dark glasses demonstrated the character's knowledge that their presence was only an avatar, and vision-reducing glasses had no real effect on their perceptions with this foreknowledge. Also, it made them look cool.

I heard one suggestion that it was the same reason that law officials use it now, to mask their intentions and expressions. I do agree with the cool factor.

Maybe it was a way to disguise their surprise about certain things and blend in better. Shades hide your expression and what you are looking at.
