One of the ship's crew and says to him, "Show this new recruit around and teach him what he should and shouldn't do… we don't want more problems like the last guy." You think about her statement and wonder what happened to the last guy. As you are being showed around you do ask, "What happened with the last guy?"
"Oh you don't want to know but you should. He went touching stuff and almost gave our location away to the enemy. Captain put him out once we got back to the docks and now he mops the floors. Don't make that mistake." He then goes to…
The ship's guns pit which comprises of a small cubicle with a joystick that controls a large gun on the external part of the ship. "I really like this section of the ship so I thought I would show you first. Want to sit down and get a feel for it?"
Excited about controlling some real guns you reply in agreement as you are shown what to do. "The safety is on so you will only be able to move the turret. Get a feel for it and then I can run a test simulation for you, will you like that?"
"Hell yeah!" you reply excited by the prospect of doing something more than feeling inadequate about this new world you are now discovering. As the simulation runs you see some squid like mechanical objects approaching. You ask, "What is that?"
"That's the enemy, shoot it!" He reaches across showing the buttons and clicks that need to be made. You learn fast and start shooting wildly at first until you get your rhythm. Within the space of a minute you are dropping the squid like creatures. In the middle you ask, "Why do they look like that… like flying octopuses?"
"Oh, they are known as sentinels, originally tasked for picking up the dead, and incapacitating live humans in order to study them," he answers.
"They intend, to fly in swarms like squids, and receive their orders from within the matrix," he says.
"I guess, their multiple appendages, help with its locomotion, and add to its ablative armor," he adds.
"What?!" You respond to the answer hoping that there aren't other creatures resembling whales, sharks or other land creatures that you will have to shoot at. Your fingers start to warm from the gun and soon the last of the sentinels falls. You ask "Are there more?" while looking on the radar.
