The history of the holiday we celebrate as christmas has its roots much deeper than the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. But the history of christmas spans back more that 4000 years to the pagan tribes of England and the pagan Germanic tribes. You may be shocked to know that christmas was not celebrated for almost three hundred years after the birth of Jesus. In fact, things such as christmas trees, mistletoe, and even birthdays were banned as pagan by the early church. Most of our imagery including Santa Claus, giving wrapped presents, christmas trees, and lights all come from pagan origins. The Germanic tribes used alters(fireplaces) to bring good cheer from Thor and "Santa Claus" rode a white horse much like the god Odin (god of death and the all-father). St. Nick has almost no factual evidence to back up that he even existed. And still some traditions go back to the Mesopotamian Valley tribes.
