CEBU, Philippines - A new temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be built in Cebu, Philippines, it was announced last week. It will be the second temple for the Church in the Philippines. There has been a temple in Manila since September 25, 1984. There are over half a million members of the Church in the Philippines, with more than 1,000 congregations.

"The significance of what is done here is to dedicate the land to the Lord and to pray . . . that we may prepare ourselves for the blessings of the temple," said Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles at the groundbreaking ceremony held on November 14, 2007, for the Cebu Philippines Temple complex in Lahug, Cebu City.

CEBU CITY, Philippines - President Thomas S. Monson arrived in Cebu on Friday for Sunday's dedication of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' newest temple. On Saturday, he walked through the new Cebu Philippines Temple, which is the 133rd worldwide. President Monson said he has been to the Philippines several times and that being there again is "like returning home." Ref. Source 2

Cebu temple rites: Mormon church President Thomas S. Monson leads dedication in Philippines

In offering the prayer to dedicate the 133rd temple in operation by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, President Monson expressed gratitude for the missionaries who served in the Philippines, beginning nearly half a century ago, and for "the thousands of missionaries who have followed in their footsteps."

The church gained official recognition in the Philippines in 1961. Ref. Source 8
