Becoming A Citizen Of Trinidad And Tobago

What are the benefits of becoming a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago? I've been a resident here for awhile and was told that I should become a citizen but I don't know if there is really a benefit, so what are the benefits?

You will enjoy ALL the benefits of a citizen by birth except becoming the President (I am not sure about Prime Minister).

Thank you for the answer but that's my question... What are the benefits of becoming a citizen? I am asking this because I am a resident already so is it necessary to become a citizen?

Off the top of my head if you are a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago then you can:

* Vote
* Be elected for parliament
* Have access to government housing
* Access to government programs where you must be a citizen
* You become a member of the Commonwealth

You cease to be defined as a "Foreigner" And some employers have a policy of hiring locals over foreigners so it obviously enhances your employment opportunities. Secondly, as per the previous post, you can access Government loans as a citizen only and not as a foreigner.

In Trinidad, preference is given to locals, then CARICOM nationals if they have a Skills Certificate and then nationals of the British Commonwealth and native speakers of English. Other foreigners come due to the presence of foreign owned businesses.

As a non-Commonwealth national, it would therefore definitely be in your favour if you plan to stay here indefinitely.

I think it takes 10 years to become a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago but you can become a resident in 3 years. Things might have changed though.

Trinidad and Tobago also allows dual citizenship so if you are lucky enough to become a citizen then you can retain the citizenship you already have.
