Flogging As A Deterrent In Trinidad & Tobago

Name: George

Title: Flogging as a deterrent

Comments: The introduction of flogging criminals in public won't ever get off the ground here. The subject headline appeared briefly in the Express early this morning but soon was pulled. We have too many wealthy idiotic people of responsibility here in positions of authority who are ready to throw their arms up in the air in support of that failing civil rights organisation. Moreover the opposition will never support any PNM ideas or suggestion. Our politicians have continued to play a tit for tat political game, where the introduction of some serious legislation are concerned and that is the very reason why the re-instatement of the death penalty will never be revived here. They just don't like the public seeing that any ideas or suggestion from the opposition party have merit .This works in a vice versus fashion in our politics, and reflects the childish mentality of our politicians Flogging criminals in public although an old method used as a deterrent may be one answer to our need to keep criminals at bay here, and may help in reducing the galloping crime rate. It will certainly help in reducing the workload on the police. However pigs night fly before any serious political discussion which includes politicians from the opposition on this matter will ever be undertaken.

Update: Comments: Hello, I wish to apologise as the article mentioned in my above comment was not pulled. It was on the letters page in the Express and is still available for reading. This however does not alter my opinion on the idea of introducing of flogging here.

Hi George I read your statement with surprise and I would like to know more of your thoughts about flogging criminals in public. How exactly will help in reducing crime? Do you have any official statistics of other countries where they have implemented flogging and they have seen a significannot reduction in crime, etc? Thanks.

Comments: Human beings are very vulnerable when it comes to public physical humiliation. No one wants to be seen being flogged for any criminal misdemeanour not even the toughest rogue. Since our police seem to be unable to cope with the expansion of criminal activities here, and long term jail sentences seems to have now lost its effectiveness because of the comforts offered in modern prisons I feel certain that flogging will have an effect on reducing our crime rate and halt the callous crime spree here. I am fully aware that it may be seen as a barbaric act and is now outlawed in almost countries however since our criminal seem to apply barbarism and unnecessary violence in committing certain crime they should therefore be treated in the appropriate manner. Moreover the countries that still use this form of punishment have seen good results and do not have a high crime rate as those who do not. Corporal punishment is usually aligned to flogging of adult and though there is a growing call to stop corporal punishment it is still applied in many American states because it works well on certain stubborn, disobedient and wayward children. By the way statistics in respect of punishment by flogging are now not published. However one only has to observe the mannerisms, behaviour, character, and self discipline of citizens in the nations that still implement punishment by flogging which they have developed because of the punishment that awaits them if they step out of line.

Tobago and Trinidad Deterrent As Flogging

George, thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, it is just well, purely opinion. I was hoping you would present evidence to support that flogging is the way to go. You mentioned the comforts offered in modern prisons and it makes me think that you either live outside Trinidad & Tobago or you are not familiar at all about how our prisons look like. They are in horrendous conditions.

Comments: Just as a matter of interest I believe Singapore uses corporal punishment in respect of school children and men. With regards to the conditions of prisons in Trinidad all I can say is despite their horrible condition they seem to have no effect on acting as a deterrent against crime on this island. Perhaps the present state of our prisons are really too accommodating and should be left to decay even further. There seems by the expanding and widespread lawlessness of many of our citizens they are eager and have a desire to end up behind bars.

Comments: Yes man. If there is one thing these local hooligans and criminals are afraid of here is good beating. They enjoy dishing it out to others but run mile if they know that they too will get a good licking. I say bring back the catonine tail, whip them hard. Especially those involved in corruption. I am sure it will bring them to their senses.
