The Art Of Discussion - Page 5

I'm new to the site and the thread, but bravo to tackling the issue. I'm a veteran public school teacher, and I taught Communication for 20 years. One of my greatest challenges was trying to instruct students on the nuances of discussion vs. Debate/argument vs. Persuasion. Discussion is an "Open-minded" engagement, that while often more serious and complex than a personal conversation, is not expectant of a point, counter-point challenge. It should always be a "Safe-zone" for exploring the curiosities, shadows, and possibilities of what in other formats could be an antagonistic competition for defense and/or justification of ideology. Discussion should make us "Hungry" for further engagement and discovery of viewpoints previously unconsidered as well as styles of thought and reasoning that can further train our own. But unfortunately, in our "Time-sensitive"/"On-demand" society, true discussion takes more time than many are willing to sacrifice and/or devote. And we often think that we'll re-visit that discussion later only to have forgotten or to have moved on to the next burning question. Cheers to better engagement and more civil discourse!
