Trinis Like To Say I Am Not Black, I Am Mixed - Page 3

Name: Trinidadian

Comments: LDS, again you're bias are troubling.

"There is not such a thing as the typical "Latino" Since there are many races within the Latin community."

There is not such thing as a typical 'Trinidadian' either since there are many races within the Trinidadian community.

Also, a more interesting question might be does being a Trinidadian come before all these silly labels you're concentrating on?

Trinis Like To Say I Am Not Black, I Am Mixed Caribbean / Tobago & Trinidad

All of us are mixed in some way or the other but as JB mentioned earlier in this thread we are all just one race or color: "Black". For north American countries and Europe there isn't a mixed option its either you're black or white. Trinis do like to say they have "Spanish" In them or whatever, sometimes I can see it and sometimes I can't but for me it only matters what kind of attitude you have about life rather than what you look like or the color of your skin.

Just to clarify:

Trinidad never had a large amounts of Spanish people coming over directly from Spain. Look at the statistics for yourself: At the end of the Spanish rule there were only 150 Spaniards according to Andrew Carr - a historian.

Long ago we didn't use a term called "Latino" Or "Hispanic" And we recently picked these as a result of the American influence but historically people from Latin America here in Trinidad were referred to as "Spanish people" And the older generation of Venezuelan descendants in Trinidad are referred to as such and the festival in Lopinot is called the "Spanish heritage Festival" Though it resembles Venezuelan culture more than that of Spain.

The British allowed thousands of Venezuelans to acquire land for cocoa cultivation. They also fled to Trinidad in 1814 & 1870 because of the Independence Movement in the case of the former year when the Spanish tried to suppress the revolutionaries and the Guzman Blanco dictatorship in the case of the latter.

Another point:

We have lots of mixtures in Trinidad and I think that the entire Portuguese and French creole community is now mixed.

Africans in the Western Hemisphere are genetically impure and European Y-chromosomes have been detected in many Africans in this part of the world
