This rhetoric has been spread for a long time but it was made more popular because of Osama bin Laden's 911 attack on America. Muslims who say they are opposed to this way of thinking are not as 'loud' about it as those who want war so public perception about Islam is not the fault of those who know little to nothing about the religion.
