I have a generic (not name-brand) 800MHz PIII with 128MB RAM and a 19" monitor. It works well for as often as I use it. I end up working on my laptop more, and it's not even my laptop, it belongs to the company I work for. My home pc has a DVD-ROM and CD-RW as well. I'm not going to worry about upgrading it right now or getting a new one, until it crashes or I come into a lot of money. If the latter happens, I'll probably invest in an Alien pc, which is built for gaming.
I like mine a lot, but really want to do some upgrading. I built it up from scratch, hand picked every single part. I have a P4 2.26 processor, 2gb of 800mhz RAM, two 120gb 7200 rpm hard drives, a dual layer DVD +/- R(RW), a M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard, ATI Radeon 9800xt (256mb) video, 17" ViewSonic pro monitor, Microsoft Elite wireless mouse and keyboard, Altec Lansing speakers and subwoofer, Enermax 475 watt power supply and an Intel D850EMV2 motherboard. I run 4 fans not including the power supply's fan and the processor fan The case is modular and everything is easily removable. I use a Behringer 8 channel mixer to run sound in and out for recording, I have 4 usb ports and 3 firewire. Oh, and a wireless network router for my laptop. I do a lot of audio engineering and multitrack recording, plus gaming
Blackwulf, sounds to me like you also paid a fortune for it. What is your resource rating on startup (windows free resourcews percentage). I especially like the 2gb of memory, I am sure you almost never crash with several programs running.
It goes something like this:
Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 3.00 GHz
2 x 512 RAM
hard drives - 40 + 80 GB (both 7200 rpm)
Teac dual layer DVD +/- R(RW)
Leadtek Winfast DV 2000 TV card (I like to watch/record football on my comp)
Skystar 2 - satellite card
LG Flatron L1730S TFT - 17'' monitor (it's less harmful for my eyes)
The next thing is to buy a better video card ... I got a Nvidia Geforce 440 MMX. Also I'd like an other "box" (maybe some Thermaltec). In the mean time I'm angry with myself 'cause I got AGP instead of PCI Express type motherboard.

As sad as this may be, I am running a Celeron 1.3, 1GB RAM, 256MB ATI Radeon graphics controller, with all the frills, (DVD+/-RW) whole kit. I hate my computer. It does for the most part everything that I need to do, but a lot of my special software projects and creation design application kill the performance to even have them installed. Celeron processors are horrible for any performance apps other than office and internet. Worst thing about it, I have worked on computers for years and I have given away better PC's than the one that I currently use. How pathetic am I?
RaulDrake - I agree you may have made a mistake not going with PCI-X over AGP but you should check out the new lines of ATI's cards. They make an AGP equiv for almost all of their high end PCI-X cards. They are a little pricey, but their performance is best on the market.
